HOW TO LEARN ITALIAN IN ITALY
ADVANCED : READING
Suppose that – after some (or more) months of intensive study of Italian in Italy, you can finally communicate with some confidence, you understand most of the things people say to you, you can navigate an Italian menu and have already surprised your friends at home with your brand-new Italian language skills.
You feel better, you have arrived at the famous “livello soglia” : the place where most of the people who learn the Italian language usually… get stucked.
Because, as a matter of fact, if you keep on studying, you realize that you make almost no progress, for example you learn new rules of Italian grammar, become an expert in doing all types of exercises - but your conversation in Italian lags, remains the same, maybe efficient but not refined, always using the same words, the same sentences, you even feel like you are always repeating the same things….
The fact is, you can now survive with your Italian language - therefore your autopilot, having done its (magical) work, has left, and you are now alone with your grammar books, your rationality and your stamina.
It’s up to you, you can happily live in Italy for the rest of your life with this knowledge of Italian language; or you can give it a try, and continue climbing; be advised that here you are into thin air, the pace is slower, and you have to be humble - follow the advices of the experts. Most of the experts will advice you to read. Good idea. Try to do as follows:
1. choose a book in Italian that interest you, or that you have always desired to read. If you do not like books, magazines are ok (better no newspapers), but you have to choose longer texts or read regularly every day
2. promise to yourself that you will arrive at any cost at the end of this book ( even at a slow pace, as told)
3. During the reading, do not use any dictionary or similar, try to understand the general meaning, try to imagine, etc. – keep going.
4. After a while you will realise that there are many sentences you do not understand but it does not matter for the general meaning, there are many words that you do not understand but it does not matter for the meaning of the sentences, and … and there are some words that keep coming again and again, really disturbing you. Because these words really represent a problem if you want to go on.
5. You are really curious about these words, so now you can look at them on your dictionary and have this “Eureka”! feeling. You have met some pivotal words, very important as you have seen, now you know and will never forget them, and they will come to your memory with no effort - also when you speak.
6.Meanwhile, by reading, your memory will have fixed many patterns, structures, common metaphors, lexical chunks typical of the Italian language that are now ready to be used, and your Italian conversational skills will improve a lot.
The more you will read this way, the better you will speak Italian.
